Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William's paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle's name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Don't Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
